If for any particular compatibility reason a user needs to use wayland, that is fine. It can be recommended. But for a more responsive desktop experience, a better 3d and video playback experience "on the Pi" (and other low powered systems), which I am assuming what the original poster wants, x11 is still the better option, at least for the time being. That has been my experience since RPIOS switched to wayland and also with any other operating system i have tested on the Pi, I always prefer X11 to wayland.
PS: Screen tearing does not happen with VLC on x11 when you go full-screen.
