You shouldn't really need the step-up converter unless you are planning to use any 5V devices connected to the Pico.
Have a read of sections 3.5 and 3.6 of the Pico 2W datasheet which covers powering from battery and including a charger. Power with a battery via a Schottky diode connected to the VSYS pin (39) and the Pico's on-board buck/boost regulator will take care of providing 3.3V to the chips.
