Darwin is the the best source as it's basically a tap into everything which passes throughout the entire UK network.
I couldn't get my head round their API las time I tried ... Ended up scraping real time trains webpage to get that.
That, plus data complexity, is also why I'm scraping; let them turn it into humanly usable info. I only scrape when I open my Android App, pass over a 'time to pull next refresh' based on when something should have changed, or 5 minutes. So am putting minimal load on the site, and only when the App has focus.

The following, and the table links at the bottom, give a good idea of what data is available, but there's a lot of jargon most won't understand, and I don't pretend to -
