I would look at something like ownClould / nextClould etc with a client rather than run your own server.
If you want to DIY it then look at soemthing like Tailscale / Zeroteir / Pi-VPN to give you a secure connection back to your server - the first two would be my goto as they address the needs for external ports on the router being open and can cope with any CG-NAT you may be behind...
Not being a Windows user I am not sure how Explorer will react to an FTP site - maybe a Samba share (behind a VPN - NEVER open this directly to the internet) would be a better solution for this? Possibly using ftp://<ip address> will work (but the security of this is unknown to me).
