Has anyone figured out how to edit files stored on a NAS such as OpenMediaVault or plain SAMBA? LibreOffice gives a "Document in use" error. If you open a copy, you can't save the edited copy back to the NAS.

Other programs (Text Edit) have no problems, and Libreoffice in Ubuntu (distribtion via Imager) works fine too.

See my post from October 2023 for more details.

In the past I've also had difficulties with certain applications and Samba. As I understand it the difficulty is Windows file locking doesn't map well to Linux compounded by the fact that the Unix extensions in Samba were deprecated and then removed a number of years ago.

According to Fido nobody cared after the demise of Sun Microsystems to create Unix extensions for more recent CIFS protocols. I pointed out the Unix extensions were originally contributed by Hewlett Packard, but the only reply was barking.

For these reasons I gave up using Samba to share files on Linux about ten years ago and switched to Kerberos authenticated NFS v4. It's a bit of a pain to set up, especially for systems with dynamically assigned IP numbers, but since then all those file locking problems are gone.

While the limitations with Samba are not unique to Bookworm, the way file locking is configured in LibreOffice may well be different. I don't know if this is one of those won't fix issues or not. I'm surprised it doesn't just work.

I'd try creating an additional user account on the Pi and then check if LibreOffice works properly with that new account.
