If depends on if you are talking roll your own kind of robotics club or FRC Robotics (since you mentioned going to competitions). For "roll your own" the Pi is likely being used as the main brain of the robot. If FRC, it likely is only being used to teach concepts and perhaps running a vision pipeline on the robot.
Assuming "roll you own" I would go with the 4B 4GB as your standard dev platform. Will run a graphical build environment much better than the 3B+. Can actually deploy to a smaller/cheaper Pi on the robot.
If FRC, you likely want all the compute power you can get for vision. When I was involved with FRC we were using 3B+, and upgraded to the 4B as soon as they came out.
