General discussion • Verdict on Pi 5 gaming

Seems that the CLI is the only way to go to avoid tearing - vsync doesn't get rid of screen tearing under X/wayland.

My verdict for 1920x1080 gaming is, too laggy under wayland, good if you can live with screen tearing under X, and great on CLI.

This is from testing my game '3 Crystals' which I chose for the fast moving action. The screen tearing is really noticable. You won't find a more optimised game, so I expect these results to hold.

Now, since CLI gaming is the way to go, you're not out of luck if you have a 3 or 4. The 4 will do 1080 and the 3 will do 720.

Now keep in mind, this is for 'Pi-like experiences.' Simple games because the more drawing and things you start doing, it's going to slow down further. However, those 'simple' games encompass things like SNES, Genesis, N64-like stuff even if fully optimized (might need a drop to 720)

if your code isn't optimized, you might as well not even try though, unless you want to make it so. If everything isn't streamlined, this device is probably too limited. Sell it on Steam to people with 18000K processors and 9080's.

EDIT: The information on Wayland is incorrect if you use:

Code:

export SDL_VIDEODRIVER=wayland
As mentioned by Mikael below. With that enabled games run just as well as under X without the tearing!
